The three North Stars of Leadership: The Transformational Core

Star-sky

Leadership Team Coaching operates on the principle that an individual never operates in a vacuum but rather always operates embedded in a larger system: the team, the organization, the market, and so on. Effective leadership is not solely based on an individual’s vision or performance. Instead, it requires consideration of three distinct yet inseparable aspects: the individual north star (INS), the team north star (TNS), and the whole organizational system north star (ONS).

Leadership that creates an impact considers the individual’s influence on others around: colleagues, stakeholders, and the entire ecosystem in which the individual operates. Polaris, the celestial body that has become synonymous with orientation, serves as an illustration. As a triplet system of stars, it represents a perfect symbol for effective leadership. Effective leadership must take into account the impact of an individual’s decisions and measure it by the sense of commitment and desire to excel that leaders instill in others.

Leadership coaching focused on the INS concentrates on the individual’s vision, mindset, and resourcefulness. Coaching helps leaders develop greater self-awareness, identify their areas of strength as well as the areas that require further development, and work on strategies to enhance their leadership skills. However, representing the individual north star in this way is incomplete and even misleading. Effective leadership is not just about an individual’s vision or performance, but also about the impact of their decisions on others around them, including colleagues, stakeholders, and the entire ecosystem. Leadership is effective if it is contagious.

Putting the I in Impact

Strong interpersonal relationship skills are key to effective leadership, but that is only a part of the necessary ingredients for creating high-performing teams. Leaders should also be able to communicate clearly and inspire others to excel while balancing productivity and positivity. Therefore, when addressing the TNS, coaching is focused on the individual just as much as it is on the team. The individual is an integral part of the team and measured by the cohesion and overall performance of the team.

When coaching on the ONS, the goal is to help leaders understand their and the team’s position in the larger organizational and market contexts. Coaching helps leaders develop a systemic perspective and identify opportunities to create positive change in their organization. Effective leadership must take into account the impact of their decisions on various systems.

Understanding how the INS, TNS, and ONS are intertwined, leaders can develop a holistic approach to leadership that creates an impact and drives positive change throughout their organization.
